What is a Bat Mitzvah?
A Bat Mitzvah is a special moment in your daughter’s life, marking the transition to Jewish adulthood, when she takes on the rights and responsibilities of a Jewish adult. We mark this age not as an endpoint of childhood but, as the beginning of adulthood, when your daughter enters a new phase of life involving uncertainties and trying to understand herself and the ever changing world around her. A Bat Mitzvah is the starting point of a lifelong journey of finding one’s place in Judaism, following a rich tradition of amazing Jewish women throughout history.
At Pinner Shul we would like to help you celebrate this unique moment in your daughter’s life. Although there is no set requirement or ceremony, there are a various options. Many Bat Mitzvah girls will deliver a Dvar Torah (speech with a Torah message) to the community on a Shabbat morning based on some learning in the months leading up to her big day. Others may choose to celebrate at another time, for instance a Sunday lunch with Jewish music and dancing or at a Friday night service. Whatever you choose, we recommend taking this opportunity to learn more about Judaism and Torah, and we would be happy to support you in finding the best program or teacher to help you do that.
If you would like to use the Shul, either for Shabbat morning and Kiddush, or for a Sunday or weeknight event, please be in touch with Carolyn in the shul office on 020 8868 7204
