You are here

Vayelech 2019

I don’t know if you’ve been in the position of a chief executive building a very successful company from scratch and being told by the board that you’ve come to your last day.

And Hashem said to Moshe, “Behold your days are approaching (for you) to die” [Devarim 31:14]

The moment has been coming for some time but now here it is. You’ve identified your successor

And Moshe called Yehoshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel “Be strong and courageous! For you shall come with people to the land which the Lord swore to their forefathers to give them” [Devarim 31:7]

and spent hours upon hours training and developing them because you want the business to continue being as incredible in the future as it has been all the time you’ve been involved in it. That’s not to say that there haven’t been ups and downs along the way but all in all you’ve built something substantial and you want it to last.

The chairman whispers in your ear “you’ve been great but you know, unfortunately, the future is going to be horrible. People just aren’t going to get it right even though you’ve done a brilliant job preparing the next guy”.

And they will forsake Me and violate My covenant [Devarim 31:16]

Before you finish can you please have one last go at telling everyone why it’s important to follow the path that you’ve set out.

If you get your message across maybe the business will still be around for a long time.

And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel…[Devarim 30:19]

.…. For {the song} will not be forgotten from the mouth of their offspring…. [Devarim 31:21]

Rashi explained that the song included the message that they would sin but Hashem promised to Israel that the Torah would never be completely forgotten by their offspring.

The Children of Israel are still around over 3000 years later. As a chief executive I’d be proud if my business achieved another 50 years, a sixtieth of that time.

And there was no other prophet who arose in Israel like Moshe [Devarim 34:10]

Wishing a speedy refuah sh’lemah for Yaffa Adina bat Elka and everyone else who is unwell.
