"traditional Jewish education for children"
Three of the main local communities, Bushey, Pinner & Northwood and Stanmore & Canons Park Synagogues have been co-operating successfully in providing the Challenge programme for our teenagers, based at Stanmore & Canons Park Synagogue.
The three Chedarim of Bushey, Pinner & Northwood and Stanmore & Canons Park have now merged to form the Aleph Learning Centre NW. The Aleph Learning Centre NW, which comes under the auspices of the Living and Learning department of the United Synagogue, is able to access some of the programmes and curriculum already developed, and being developed, by and for the original Aleph Learning Centre. This also means that our children will benefit from larger classes in each age group, allowing wider friendships to flourish, as well as the learning opportunities that larger numbers bring.
Under the enthusiastic leadership of Headteacher, Rabbi Gavin Broder, children from school years 1 to 6 are taught in year groups. A priority is Hebrew reading, which is taught through the innovative graded “Aleph Champ” books. This is supported by teaching assistants who listen to the children read individually. Other topics are covered by a combination of formal classroom teaching and creative work, with Festival-orientated activities providing an important framework for the year. An emphasis is placed on middot (Jewish values) and Jewish history through teaching and project-work.
Pre bar- and bat-mitzvah children in Years 7 have access to an exciting programme, with an emphasis on media-based discussion in a less formal teaching environment.
